Christmas over and time for new stuff
I always feel that the 26th is the start of a new year.
I am going to try hard to follow advice that we give out on our website, www.looklovely.net.
The ‘we’ is my colleague Tricia and me. We sit down about 3 times a year and write the suggestions on the daily diary.
I will try to use this blog to record how I am doing.
My other ’self’ resolution is to try to dress in a stylish manner appropriate to my age. I’m not sure what that is. I mean, I know what my age is – 58 – but I find it hard to decide what is appropriate. I don’t feel middle aged, but when I look in the mirror I certainly don’t look young.
The last time I went clothes shopping for myself (Nov 09 – I am a frequent shopper) I was adviced that a belt around the hips was a ‘good thing’ to pull together a look.
The trouble with belts is that unless they are threaded through loops, they tend to find their own place. In my case that is with the back of the belt balanced on my rear end, and the front drooping down to emphasise my pot gut. Oh dear. Must try harder.
Notes on the outfit: purple cardigan from Boden (2009), top from Marks & Spencers, purchased in Chester 2009, cord jeans by Hobbs from Cheadle 2009, shoes by Ecco, purchased in Chichester 2009. Belt by Jackpot from Iris Boutique, Exeter 2009.

Advent Sunday
Today is the first Sunday of Advent, the season when Christians prepare for Christmas.
I helped with the Sunday Club today. One of the more artistic leaders had prepared a ‘craft’ project for the children, which when assembled was a large poster with 4 purple candles.
The children have time in the Sunday Club and then go into church to exchange the Peace, and to join the Communion. This week they went to the front of the church so that they could see the ring of Advent candles, and one child lit the first candle.
The weather continues to be abysmal. Not cold, but wet, windy and dark.
To brighten things up I wore my blue grey top that I bought in Seaford in about 2005, with my Avoca cardigan that came from Carmarthen in 2008.
I added a necklace that I purchased in Carmarthen at the same time as the cardigan.
No photo of my trousers; they are brown (a tiny herringbone pattern) and came from Chico
- necklace with red and grey beads
- Avoca cardigan
s in Denver, Colorado in 2007.

Wind and Rain and Staying Indoors

The weather was terrible yesterday – rain, and more rain. The forecast for today was more of the same, so I am staying indoors all day.
In an effort not to look miserable, I am wearing brown trousers by Basler, purchased in Stratford-upon-Avon in 2006.
My top is also brown, from Boden circa 2005.
To inject some colour I am wearing a red cardigan by Pure Cashmere (2007), and red shoes that I bought at Marks and Spencer in Eastbourne in 2007.

Malta Holiday
I have just returned from a week’s holiday in Valletta, on the island of Malta.
The average day time temperature was about 20 Centigrade (about 70 Fahrenheit), with the temperature dropping a bit in the evenings.
I flew on a budget airline, so took only one suitcase.
Here is my packing list:
2 pairs beige linen trousers (I wore one pair on the flight)
2 skirts – one green floral, one brown floral
2 dresses – one with brown spots, one a grey/brown print
4 cardigans – one pink with short sleeves, one white 3/4 sleeves, one green long sleeve, one brown long sleeve.
6 t-shirts: brown (2), blue/green , brown striped, green, pink
2 blouses – 1 pink striped, 1 green floral
The cardigans colour coordinated with the dresses , skirts and trousers.
When we went out to dinner in the evening I changed into a dress, and combined with different cardigans for different looks.
I also took 1 chiffon top (wore to dinner 1 evening). This took up little space, but was not especially useful. I probably would not take it again for this type of trip. It would be more useful somewhere hot, and I could wash it in the evening and wear it again.
I took a lightweight brown mac that I wore some evenings, and also for the flight home.
Also I packed a large cashmere pashmina. This is always a useful addition, can go round the shoulders in the evening, be worn as a shawl reading in bed, used as an extra blanket, etc.
I carried a brown hand bag (with an umbrella tucked inside).
I also packed fresh underwear for every day, spare pants and 2 nighties.
For shoes I took 1 sensible pair for walking, 1 pair brown sandals and 1 pair white sandals.
I wore every item of clothing that I took, and did not miss anything that I had left at home.
Every piece of clothing that I took has been shown in previous posts, so I have not included them here.

Chichester Cathedral
Yesterday I was prevailed upon to drive Beautiful Daughter to Chichester so that she could visit the Joules shop.
It was a wonderful Indian Summer day, so the drive was a pleasure. She bought a shirt at Joules reduced by 10% and I bought some Christmas decorations.
We had lunch outdoors, in the garden of the Cloisters Cafe in the cathedral precinct.
I wore a pair of Chico trousers that I bought in Denver (not pictured), with my new Marks & Spencer top that I got in Chester earlier this month.
It was so warm that i didn’t need a coat – I wore my purple cardigan from Boden.
As I knew there would be a lot of walking I wore my Ecco shoes that Melissa doesn’t like. These came from Stratford-upon-Avon earlier this year.
I carried my brown handbag that I purchased in Chester in about 1995.

The Druid’s Head and Plato
I have been in to Brighton to meet a friend for lunch today. We arranged to meet at out usual restaurant, only to find that it is closed on Monday.
Too cold to wander around, we went into the Druid’s Head as it was the closest. Also I had lunch there about 15 years ago.
Not surprisingly, it has changed a bit in 15 years, but only a bit. In fact the only change I noticed is that they don’t serve egg and chips anymore. It is possible that the piped music is louder, but more likely that I have grown more intolerant.
On the train into the city I was reading Part IV of Plato’s ‘Republic’. This is the bit where they talk about the constituent parts of the self. The 2 main parts are divided into what I guess could be called carnal desires and educated desires. So the carnal part thinks ‘even though it is only 11 am I want a glass of whisky’ and the other part says ‘that way lies the road to ruin.’ Plato labels the third part ‘passion’.
As to what the Druid’s though about the self I have no idea. I think that the Druid’s built Stonehenge, but I could be wrong about that.
I don’t know why the pub is called the Druid’s Head – it is traditional pub, with a wooden bar and little round tables and padded chairs. I guess the piped music is not, strictly speaking, traditional but it has become the convention.

I wore an assembly of brown and teal blue:
My teal blue jersey from M&S (Chester 2009), brown tie cardigan from Pure cashmere (2007), brown skirt by Boss (Guildford 2005), brown Basler mac (Stratford-upon-Avon 2006), brown Hobbs shoes (Brighton 2005). And then I added my almost newest necklace, purchased in Seaford 2009 and maybe the oldest item in my wardrobe – brown bag bought in Chester 1995.

What I bought in Durham
After my photographic expedition around the river and cathedral, I explored the shops.
Most of the shops in Durham are the usual high street selection, but I did find two interesting retail opportunities.
The first was a very girly emporium called le Beado, selling (surprise) mostly beads. There was also a good selection of necklaces, bracelets and some cute plastic brooches. I choose a little goose, which I shall think of as my Durham Duck.
There is also a shop called van Mildert – with rooms for men’s and women’s clothing. Very stylish if pricey. I decided to try to curb my enthusiasm for volume, and spent money on a Paul Smith shirt. Actually, there isn’t much choice as the shirt purchase used up most of my budget.

Durham
I had the best part of a day in Durham, and was determined to get a good photo of the cathedral.
The night before I plotted my route on a map that the hotel receptionist gave me. I knew which bridges to cross and where the paths were beside the river.
Unhappily, the day was cloudy, with rain threatening.
The trees alongside the River Wear were heavy with rain from the previous night, and I had to put up the hood on my Gortex coat to keep my hair dry.
Two men launching a canoe told me to go into the garden of a pink house to get the best shot of the cathedral. They assured me that the people who lived in the house weren’t at home and that nobody would see me there.
For this expedition, I wore my Boden jeans that I got this year.
I wore my purple Ecco shoes from Chichester (also 2009), my grey striped Boden top (2009) and a heather coloured jersey from la Redoute.
To add a touch of sophistication (joke) I added some beads that I bought in Matlock in 2008.
I carried my Marks & Spencer bag that I purchased in Sheffield in 2007.
On top I wore my Gortex parka , which I have not shown.
Hope you think my photo of the cathedral was worth the effort.

Travelling North

I have looked at the BBC weather forecast for Durham and it is not good. Tomorrow afternoon is supposed to be White Cloud, with 11 centigrade.
Wednesday it is predicted to rain, with a maximum temperature of 12. Oh dear.
For the journey up, I shall wear my grey and black Boden dress that I bought this year.
I’ll wear purple tights and my purple shoes by Ecco that I bought in Chichester. I am travelling my train and my journey includes crossing London via the underground system so I need comfortable shoes.
I will add my purple jacket by Sandwich that came from Warrington in 2008..
My handbag will be my old faithful from Marks & Spencer, purchased in Sheffield in 2008.
